The idea of marketing is to help a business sell. Done right, marketing can drive customers to a business' products and services. Usually this means advertising, but not always. It's hard to imagine a lot of people would specifically ask for Dasani water if it weren't for the advertising. (It's just filtered tap water.) Or use American Express credit cards (paying fees to use their product).
Done wrong, it can destroy a company. Remember pets.com? A lot of companies think more eyeball means more business. Wrong. There are two basic concepts in marketing: machine gun vs. rifle. In the machine gun method, your message sprays everywhere and contantly (e.g. GEICO) in the hopes getting enough $ despite a low success rate. In the rifle method, a message is crafted for a specific group and sent through targeted methods (mailings, trade journals, trade shows, etc.) If you're making galvanized pipes, you're better off advertising in automobile magazines and engineering journals than making a 30-second commerical for the Super Bowl. If you want more, head to your library and look at the main topics of a first-year marketing text. There's a lot of specialization within marketing. But the thing to remember is marketing is a tool: It can be used properly or misused badly. There aren't many cure-alls, so you have to smart in selecting a marketing strategy. |

Marketing is the beginning of the important functions of any business organisation. If insufficient business is coming through its doors all other sections and departments cannot tick and function properly and profitably.
Bad customers services, lack of risk managements and professional staff with interpersonal skills can hurt a business. |
