Hi Missy!

That is great that you want to start your own business. Contrary to a previous answer, people are still getting their hair cut and styled, you just have to be a little smarter than the other guys in getting business.

I think it is an excellent idea to start at home so your overhead will be as low as it can get.

The one thing you need to be really sure about is the Zoning laws in your area. If you start having lots of cars parked on your street or yard, you are going to attract attention. If you plan on having an outdoor sign, you most likely will need a permit for that too.

I work at home, but no customers ever come to my house. So for me it is really not an issue. But, something as obvious as a salon is going to probably get noticed (you hope ;>) and you sure don't need that.

Then you also will need a business license, which means you have to get a tax id number.

If I were you, I would make a trip down to your local municipality NOW and start asking a lot of questions. Most places have it all spelled out for you with checklists etc.

So, don't let all that discourage you. It is the unglamorous part, but if you really take your business serious, you want to make sure you get it all set up right from the beginning. After you start making some money, you hire a bookkeeper to help you with taxes etc.

Hope that helps! Best of luck!
